Course Description

Emphasis is on what and how to teach human sexuality education in the schools. The course includes an overview of biological, psychological and sociological aspects of sexuality education. (Spring & Fall)

Recommended Textbook

Meeks, Linda, Heit, Philip, & Randy Page (2011, 2009, 2007...). Comprehensive School Health Educaiton: Totally Awesome Strategies for Teaching Health (7th ed. or older editions). Boston: McGraw-Hill. ISBN-13: 978-0-07-340466.

The text is an important part of this class but there are copies available in the library to use for a resource. If you prefer to have your own copy, the textbook can be ordered through the SUU Bookstore by calling 435-586-7995 or through email at bookstore@suu.edu.

Cource Objectives

  • Students will write their own philosophy of sex education in secondary education.
  • Students will develop a unit plan for teaching sex education in secondary education
  • Students will have the opportunity to teach a 30-35 minute lesson one on a given topic. They will most likely work in groups of two.
  • Students will be required to provide positive feedback to their peers.
  • Students will be required to review peer lesson plans and decide how they would prefer to teach various topics and principles..
  • Students will be graded on attendance and participation. Your feedback is vital.
  • Students will be required to complete a unit plan (lesson plans...) for teaching secondary sex education.
